‘We’re really scratching the surface’ of using GLP-1s for addiction

At the OMED conference, Dr. Steven Klein from Caron Treatment Centers emphasized that the potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists in addiction treatment is just beginning to be explored, with studies showing significant reductions in alcohol intoxication, opioid overdose, and cravings. However, barriers such as high costs, limited insurance coverage, physician hesitancy, and stigma are major challenges to broader use of these medications for addiction. Klein stressed the need for more research and institutional support to fully realize their potential.
