Wernersville, PA – May 4, 2023 Caron Treatment Centers, a leading, internationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education, honored Angel Lee Helm with the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence during at ceremony at the Reading Double Tree Hotel. Global battery leader EnerSys was also recognized with the 2023 Partner in Recovery Award.

“Angel Helm is a true community-leader,” said Dave Rotenberg. “Her business acumen, expertise in finance combined with her focus on mission, has benefited many organizations here in Berks County. We’re honored to celebrate our friend - her achievements and contributions to the people of Berks County with the presentation of the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence.”

Caron presents the prestigious Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence annually to an individual or couple who, in the estimation of the Caron Board of Trustees, demonstrates the same spirit of caring and compassion exemplified by Caron’s founders Dick and Catherine Caron. Funds raised at the dinner benefit Caron’s mission of Recovery for Life, providing lifesaving addiction and mental health treatment, education and prevention services to thousands of individuals and families annually.

Helm has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Federal Home Loan Bank – Pittsburgh since 2019. In 2020, she joined the Board at Tower Health and in 2021, became a member of The Reading Education Foundation Board. She is an active member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, where she chaired the Stewardship Committee for 10 years and currently serves on the Parish Council.

Helm’s previous board service in the community includes Alvernia University, The Reading Public Museum, Berks Visiting Nurse Association and The Police Athletic League. In 2008, Helm was elected to the Wyomissing Area School Board, where she served a 4-year term.

Helm has provided invaluable leadership to Caron for 12 years, currently serving on the Caron Board of Trustees on its Executive, Compensation and Audit Committees and as Chair of the Finance Committee.

At the event, Reading-based company EnerSys, the global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, was honored with the 2023 Partner in Recovery Award for its generous and ongoing support of Caron, as well as its invaluable volunteer leadership.

“In truth, it is people like Angel and her dedication and committed businesses like Enersys that help Caron to fulfill our mission of Recovery for Life,” stated Kris Bashore, Chief Operating Office for Caron Treatment Centers.

The evening was capped by remarks from recovery speaker and actress, Mackenzie Phillips, known for her work on the hit television show, One Day at a Time. Phillips has been outspoken about her struggles with substances and trauma, and her subsequent recovery journey. In addition to her work as an actress, Phillips has gained prominence as a speaker, author and addiction counselor.

The event raised $1.1 million to support Caron’s mission. Last year Caron provided more than $7.3 million in financial assistance for treatment services. In addition, Caron recently opened The Fran and Doug Tieman Center for Research to advance the understanding of and improve treatment for substance use disorder.

The event’s Honorary Chairs were Sam McCullough and Sue Perrotty. The Event Committee Co-Chairs are Chris Kraras and Jeff Rush. Presenting sponsors were Customers Bank and EnerSys.
