Impact of Substance Use Disorders

teens at computerAudience - School, child-serving, and healthcare professionals working with families impacted by addiction
Number of Modules: Five
Estimated Completion Time: 45 minutes

Course Description
The National Institute on Drug Abuse estimates that 25 percent of American kids grow up in households where substance abuse is present. Without strong support, these children and teens are at an increased risk for the development of their own behavioral health disorders. This course will increase an understanding of how family members are impacted when addiction is present in their lives and how professionals can provide understanding, support and resources to the children, teens, and families they serve.

Expected Learning Outcomes
The expected learning outcomes of the course are to:

  • Describe the characteristics of the typical family dealing with substance use disorder based on statistics
  • Recognize observable signs that might indicate a child is impacted by the substance use disorder of a loved one
  • Explain the impact substance use disorders have on the family: relationally, financially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually
  • Identify their own attitudes and values when working with parents who may have a substance use disorder
  • Access and use resources and tools to help support children impacted by substance use disorders in the family

For Certificate of Completion
A printable Certificate of Completion will be provided at the end of the program. This certificate can be displayed, used to apply for continuing education credits, or to document your hours of professional development.

“After reviewing this course, I have a greater understanding of the effects substance use can have on children and how the effects can present themselves in a variety of ways. As a school nurse, I often witness concerning behaviors in children and parents, but now feel like I have a better understanding of recognizing that these behaviors may be a result of substance use disorders. Although I am not trained to diagnose these issues, I have learned through this program how to reach out to the resources, like Caron, to help support me in providing additional outreach and resources for families.”
