Title: The Impact of GLP-1 Medications on SUD Treatment
Presenter: Adam Scioli, DO, DFAPA, FASAM, FAOAAM

This course explores the groundbreaking potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) — such as semaglutide and liraglutide — in reducing cravings and relapse risk for individuals with substance use disorders. Dr. Scioli will delve into the neurobiological mechanisms of GLP-1 medications, review the latest preclinical and clinical research, and discuss how these therapies can complement existing approaches like medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The session will also address barriers to access, ethical considerations, and Caron Treatment Centers’ innovative BRIDGE initiative to integrate GLP-1 therapy into recovery care.

Please register below for the lunch, and register for the CEU event here.

Learning Objectives

By attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize current research on GLP-1 receptor agonists and their role in treating opioid and other substance use disorders.
  • Describe the neurobiological mechanisms through which GLP-1 signaling influences craving, reward, and relapse behavior.
  • Evaluate evidence supporting the use of GLP-1 medications as adjunctive therapies in SUD treatment.
  • Identify barriers to access, regulatory challenges, and health equity considerations related to off-label prescribing of GLP-1 medications.
