Prevention Services, New York
Prevention services in New York help students, families, and schools address substance use and behavioral health concerns before they become more serious. Through education, skill-building, and early support, prevention services help young people make healthier decisions and strengthen overall well-being.
As part of our services at our addiction treatment center in New York, we provide prevention programs through our Student Assistance Program (SAP). These services support students, parents, caregivers, and youth-serving professionals through prevention education, early intervention, and access to additional resources when concerns arise.
Our prevention services help schools and families take action early, creating opportunities to address challenges before they have a greater impact on a young person's health, education, or future.
Prevention services help students build healthy decision-making skills
Prevention education gives students practical information and skills before substance use or behavioral health concerns become larger challenges. Through age-appropriate discussions and activities, students learn how alcohol, drugs, nicotine, vaping, and other influences can affect their health, relationships, and future goals.
Through our Student Assistance Program, we provide prevention education for elementary, middle, and high school students. Programs are tailored to each age group and may address substance use prevention, healthy coping skills, emotional wellness, peer pressure, and other topics that support healthy development.
Schools throughout New York City continue to address changing substance use and behavioral health concerns among young people. Prevention services help students increase awareness, build resilience, and develop healthier ways to respond to everyday challenges.
Behavioral health assessments help identify concerns early
Sometimes parents, caregivers, teachers, or school staff notice changes in behavior, mood, academic performance, or social interactions but are unsure what is causing them. Behavioral health assessments help identify factors that may be affecting a student's well-being before concerns become more difficult to address.
Through our SAP, confidential behavioral health assessments are available for students in grades 5 through 12. Assessments may identify substance use concerns, mental health challenges, family stressors, and other factors affecting a student's well-being or school performance. Participation is voluntary, and recommendations are shared only with parents or guardians and the school's SAP Core Team.
For many families in New York City, an assessment provides answers when changes in behavior, mood, school performance, or social relationships raise concerns. Early identification can help families better understand what support may be needed and connect students with appropriate resources before challenges have a greater impact on daily life.

Prevention programs provide support when students are struggling
Not every student who needs support requires addiction treatment. Some students may be experimenting with substances, experiencing behavioral changes, struggling emotionally, or facing challenges that affect decision-making, relationships, or school performance.
We offer intervention and skill-building programs designed to address concerns early. Programs may include:
CARE (Cannabis Awareness)
Project CONNECT®
VIEWS
HOPE
These programs provide education, support, and practical strategies that help students better understand their choices and develop healthier coping skills.
Students throughout New York City face a variety of pressures related to academics, social relationships, technology, and substance use trends. These programs provide an opportunity to address concerns early, helping students build skills, increase awareness, and access additional support before challenges become more serious.
Parent education programs strengthen prevention efforts at home
Parents and caregivers often influence how young people approach difficult situations, relationships, and health-related choices. Many families have questions about vaping, substance use trends, communication strategies, and how to respond when concerns arise.
Through our PREP (Preparing Parents) program, trained Student Assistance Program specialists provide education and practical guidance for parents and caregivers of elementary, middle, and high school students. Topics may include current substance use trends, effective communication skills, setting clear expectations and consequences, building resiliency, and identifying local support resources.
For many families in New York City, prevention starts with informed conversations at home. Parent education programs help caregivers feel more confident discussing difficult topics, recognizing potential concerns, and creating a supportive environment that promotes healthy decision-making.
Prevention services support families before treatment becomes necessary
Prevention services focus on education, early intervention, and skill-building before substance use or behavioral health concerns become more serious. Many students benefit from prevention support without ever needing addiction treatment, especially when concerns are identified and addressed early.
Through partnerships with schools, school districts, and community organizations, we help students, families, and youth-serving professionals address concerns before they have a greater impact on health, relationships, or academic success. Services may be delivered in person or virtually, allowing schools and communities to access prevention resources in ways that best fit their needs.
When concerns first arise, prevention services can provide a starting point for families seeking guidance and support. When additional support is needed, students and families can be connected with appropriate resources, assessments, intervention programs, and other services that support long-term well-being.
