Researchers Just Uncovered A Silent Epidemic In Older Adults That We All Need To Be Talking About
New research presented at the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ annual meeting reveals a shocking 1,470% increase in fentanyl-related deaths among adults 65 and older over the past eight years. This surge is largely driven by fentanyl mixed with stimulants like cocaine and methamphetamines, now accounting for nearly half of fentanyl deaths in older adults.
Caron Treatment Centers' Dr. Barbara Krantz emphasizes that older adults are more vulnerable due to chronic pain, cognitive decline, and a potential lack of awareness about the dangers of mixing opioids with street drugs. As she explains, this generation, which came of age during the 1960s and 1970s, may view prescribed medications as safe without fully understanding the risks.
To combat this growing crisis, Caron experts recommend non-opioid pain management strategies, regular communication with healthcare providers, and ensuring older adults have access to harm reduction tools like naloxone. Dr. Krantz advises caregivers to be vigilant for subtle signs of medication misuse, including changes in mood, memory, or alertness.
Caron’s approach emphasizes a holistic understanding of substance use and the critical need for proactive, informed care in protecting older adults from the escalating opioid crisis.
