GLP-1s Are a Weight Loss Miracle. Could They Also Curb the Opioid Crisis?

The Rolling Stone article highlights Caron Treatment Centers’ use of GLP-1 medications (such as Ozempic) to treat substance use disorders. According to Dr. Adam Scioli, who leads the GLP-1 Clinical Initiative at Caron, "What we found was a pretty significant reduction in cravings at a much lower dose than the general population tends to be on, particularly for weight loss." The team has found that GLP-1s can help patients remain engaged in treatment, when used as part of a comprehensive treatment program. One patient, Sydney, reported that adding a GLP-1 five months into her treatment allowed her to reclaim mental space from drugs, resist relapse, and fully participate in her recovery. While not yet FDA-approved for addiction treatment, early research suggests that GLP-1s’ impact on brain reward pathways and low stigma make them a promising complement to traditional therapies.
