Caron New York Recovery Center Hosts 24th Annual New York City Gala to Benefit Caron’s Patient Scholarship Fund, May 9, 2018

Honors Elaine and Anthony Grillo with the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence and David Johansen (Buster Poindexter – New York Dolls) with the Caron Artist Award

David Johansen will perform at the Gala

NEW YORK –  Caron New York Recovery Center is expected to raise more than $1 Million to benefit Caron’s Patient Scholarship Fund at its 24th Annual New York City Gala. These funds will support patient scholarships for adolescent and young adult addicted individuals and families throughout Caron’s treatment continuum. A significant portion of the money raised will help individuals from the greater New York area.

Over six hundred guests are expected to attend the Gala held at Cipriani 42nd Street in Manhattan on May 9, 2018, which honors Elaine and Anthony Grillo with the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence and David Johansen with the Caron Artist Award. David Johansen will give a special performance. The auctioneer will be Ira Joe Fisher.

“We are thrilled to honor such special individuals at this year’s Caron New York Gala,” said Todd Whitmer, Regional Vice President of Caron New York. “Because the opioid epidemic has impacted so many more individuals, we are especially grateful to recognize Elaine and Tony and David who are all extremely dedicated to raising awareness about addiction and giving families a second chance at life.”

Last year, with the help of our generous donors in New York and nationwide, Caron provided nearly $10 million in treatment scholarships to addicted individuals and families with limited resources. A significant portion of that aid went to help individuals from the greater New York area. Caron’s New York Recovery Center offers pre- and post-treatment services, screening and education, provides a healthy recovery environment for alumni activities, and holds Parent Support Groups throughout the New York region.

Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence recipients are Elaine and Anthony Grillo. Anthony is a managing director and one of the founders of Ascribe Capital, a private equity firm affiliated with American Securities.  He currently serves on the corporate boards of Littlefuse, Inc., Lumeta Corporation and Narrative Wave Inc. His philanthropic board activities include serving on the Advisory Board of Caron Philadelphia, the Board of Trustees of  Manhattan-based George Jackson Academy, and the Board of Trustees of The Gladwyne Montessori School.

Elaine is currently a member of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of Loyola University Maryland.  She has also served on the Advisory Board of the School of Education at Loyola University for five years, and was a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Kemmerer Library in Harding, New Jersey and served on that board for five years.

Caron Artist Award recipient David Johansen was born in New York City where he sang in Rock & Roll dance bands during his high school years.  Upon graduation, he moved to the East Village where he performed with Charles Ludham’s Ridiculous Theater and joined up with the fledgling New York Dolls.  The Dolls made two iconic records before disbanding in the mid-seventies.  He then embarked on a solo career with The David Johansen Group which recorded six highly acclaimed albums and toured  incessantly for the next ten years. During this period, David began singing jump blues, calypso, and pre-Hayes Code rock & roll under the name Buster Poindexter.  At the end of the century he started a band called David Johansen & The Harry Smiths who recorded two superb albums of early American blues and mountain music.  In 2004, the remaining Dolls reunited for a one-off gig in London and have been touring and recording ever since.

The Gala co-chairs are Fran Arrow, Jennifer Bandier Boyarsky, Denise LeFrak Calicchio and John Calicchio, Joan and John Fitzsimons, Laurie and Peter Grauer, Colleen and Ed Herlihy, Hans Humes, Nancy Hunt and Niles Rodgers, Tracey Jackson, Elaine and Ken Langone, Petra and Steve Levin, Judy and Tim Ryan,  Juliana Terian, and Paul Williams.
