Rev. Laurie Durgan has served as the spiritual director for Caron Renaissance since 2014. In her current position, Rev. Laurie creates and oversees Spiritual Fridays, conducts special services, creates and presents spiritual retreats for patients and alumni, and offers spiritual counseling.
The “Spiritual Friday” program provides a comfortable safe space in which patients can explore their spiritual questions and express their beliefs. “It touches me deeply when an alumni asks if they can come to Spiritual Friday even now that they are not a patient here,” she says.
She comes to her role at Renaissance as someone who has experienced difficulties and challenges in her life and moments of spiritual crisis, which has given her a deep well of empathy and knowledge to draw on in her work. It is the transformative nature of the work Caron Renaissance does that makes her most grateful to be on staff. “To see a patient who was resistant when they came in stop in the hallway and tell me that they are grateful is a remarkable moment.”
Rev. Laurie joined Caron Renaissance in 2009 as one of the first spiritual leaders for the newly established Spiritual Friday program. She is an interfaith minister ordained through One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City in 2013. She is presently the associate minister/administrative director/youth education director at Unity of Delray Beach, where she has worked since 1985.
