What is extended care?

Extended care helps patients, especially those prone to relapse, cope with life’s ups and downs without the use of drugs or alcohol. Many people who are addicted to substances benefit from some form of extended care treatment, especially those who experience co-occurring disorders such as compulsive gambling, sex addiction, trauma, anxiety, grief or eating disorders. Extended care treatment can last from 90 days to a year or longer, depending on program structure.

The course of extended care treatment.

Extended care is normally executed in phases, beginning with intensive inpatient drug and alcohol treatment in a structured environment. As the patient makes progress, he may be encouraged to attend 12-Step meetings, begin job hunting, pursue an education or even visit home for short periods of time. Further into treatment, the patient may be transferred to a halfway house, where he will participate in intensive outpatient treatment under the supervision of qualified clinicians. Treatment becomes less intensive over time, although patients are expected and strongly encouraged to remain active in support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

Please contact Caron to learn more about extended care and whether it’s right for you or your loved one.
