Vanessa Sommer MA, CADC, ICADC, is a Family Therapist in Caron’s Opioid Treatment Program. As the Family Therapist, she has implemented a distinctive family program for family members coping with their loved one’s opioid addiction.

Vanessa focuses on educating family members about the impact of addiction and gives them a voice in treatment. The role provides a liaison for the family members to feel connected to the treatment outcomes, while developing a therapeutic process that encourages support and useful tactics to help families restore healthy boundaries and connections. Vanessa received her bachelor’s degree from Alvernia University, where she studied Clinical Psychology and Addiction Counseling. She continued her education at Rosemont College, receiving a master’s degree in Community and Applied Clinical Psychology.

Vanessa began her career working as an in-home family counselor, assisting families in rebuilding their relationships after extended separation events, developing parent education programs and implementing family workshops. Since joining the team at Caron in 2004, she has worked extensively with families impacted by addiction, developing a remarkable understanding of family dynamics and how each family has specific needs that must be met and addressed when coping with the disease of addiction. In addition to her work in the opioid program, Vanessa has expertise working with the families of older adults, healthcare professionals, young adults, and families who are facing a loved ones’ relapse. She is an experienced public speaker and presents on Addiction as a Disease, Recovery and Relapse, Family Dynamics, as well as Family Self-Care, Communication and Boundaries.
