Dr. Lelan Byrd
As the Medical Director at the Caron Atlanta Outpatient Treatment Center, Dr. Lelan Byrd oversees medical services and consultation.
His work includes evaluating patients to determine the appropriate level of care, managing their medical care, and participating in decisions about appropriate treatment.
Dr. Byrd maintains a private practice in addiction medicine, Byrd Addiction Medicine Center LLC, in Roswell, Georgia. After retiring as a surgeon, he did a year-long addiction fellowship at the University of Florida, which he completed in July 2020. He was a urology surgeon with 25 years of practice in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Urology. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1986 and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital, Georgia Baptist Hospital, and Shands Hospital in Florida.
Before going to medical school, Dr. Byrd was a professional baseball player for the Atlanta Braves and has volunteered as a coach for young people in the years since. This experience laid some of the groundwork for his decision to practice addiction medicine, having seen the prevalence of drug and alcohol use among young athletes. It has enabled him to empathize with and communicate better with high school and college students from diverse backgrounds.
Caron’s dedication to preventing and treating addiction in young people stands out in the Atlanta area where substance abuse in that age group is at alarming levels. With the availability and quality of Caron’s services, we can reach young people before the disease progresses.”
