Teachers, school staff, and youth-serving professionals are uniquely positioned to prevent substance use and promote healthy behavioral choices in schools. The following presentations and workshops prepare professionals to recognize students who are struggling and help them overcome barriers to success.

SAP Staff Presentations

SAP Staff Presentations are 45 to 90 minute presentations designed to educate school personnel on the SAP team’s role and highlight the ways in which SAP can aid students who face barriers to education or personal success. Presentations are customized to each school staff, but typically cover:

  • An overview of the purpose and role of a school’s SAP program
  • How to recognize behaviors that warrant a referral; how the referral process works
  • Current teen drug and alcohol trends; discuss the staff’s responsibility to report concerns

The Cycle of Addiction

The teen brain is constantly developing. For this reason, the younger a person is when he or she begins using, the more vulnerable he or she is to addiction. The Cycle of Addiction workshop educates professionals on the science behind addiction, as well as the physical, emotional and behavioral symptoms that manifest in teens during each stage of use— from early experimentation to chemical dependency. The workshop also teaches participants how to connect students who struggle with drug abuse or addiction to the help they need.

Substance Abuse Current Trends

Slang terms, drug popularity, and methods of drug use and concealment change regularly. It is imperative that professionals who spend a significant amount of time with young people be aware of these trends so that they can better identify and refer students who require help. In this presentation, program participants will:

  • Be updated on the latest significant drug trends
  • Learn the latest signs and symptoms of use
  • Learn how to address concerns about a student

Teens and Nicotine

Nicotine’s impact on teens is often overshadowed by other drugs, but it is a serious issue. Each day in our country, more than 3,500 kids under the age of 18 try their first cigarette and another 1,000 become regular, daily smokers. Early exposure to nicotine has been linked to increased risk for mental health disorders, other drug and alcohol addictions, poorer academic achievement, and generally poorer health.

Teens and Nicotine explores current adolescent nicotine use trends; examines the link between adolescent smoking and other drug use and mental health disorders; and explains how cessation interventions, such as Project CONNECT®, can foster positive youth development and improve the school climate.

Kids of Promise®

One in four children have been impacted by a family member’s addiction before they reach the age of 18. As professionals, learning to recognize these children; becoming more aware of the issues they face; and knowing how to refer children and adolescents to appropriate services can greatly increase their odds of success, not to mention life-long resiliency.

The Kids of Promise® (KOP) Program educates professionals and community members on the aforementioned topics and teaches them how to work with children, adolescents, and families impacted by addiction.
