Careful screening by skilled therapists is essential to ensure emotional safety and prepare clients for the Breakthrough experience. Questions regarding the timing of a client's participation are handled with a therapist's input on an individual basis. Clients who may not be candidates for Breakthrough due to serious mental health issues, current major crisis or active addictions may be given recommendations and referrals as needed. These recommendations will be made with the referring therapist's consultation and permission.

Breakthrough is not a quick fix, but an important part of a therapeutic plan for personal growth and positive change. Throughout the program, clients are advised to develop a network of support in addition to therapy. Twelve-Step support groups are suggested because of their accessibility and variety; however, any support system is helpful.

How to Refer

  • If you are new to Breakthrough you may want to contact a Breakthrough professional to discuss your client and the timing of their participation. We welcome your calls at any time.
  • If you are familiar with the program, you may suggest that your client contact the Breakthrough Admissions office at Caron and after providing and receiving some information they may be asked to provide additional information to the clinical staff of Breakthrough before they are approved and a date set.
  • If your client does not meet all admissions criteria based on their telephone intake you will be contacted by a Breakthrough therapist to provide additional information about your client and collaborate on the best options for your client.
  • Once your client arrives at Breakthrough, his or her assigned therapist will be contacting you on Monday and again later in the week for a short call. A brief summary will also be sent a few weeks after the program.

Referring therapists look to Breakthrough at Caron as an adjunct to their clients' ongoing outpatient therapy, and consistently report that they have observed immediate and long-term changes in their clients after attending Breakthrough at Caron. Their clients often demonstrate a significant shift in perspective, a new foundation of awareness and self-esteem, and a degree of relief from the pressures of painful emotions.
