Breakthrough is strongly based on attachment theory and research supporting the concept that inadequate or inappropriate attachment in early childhood negatively impacts adults in many areas of functioning. These include, but are not limited to low self-esteem, insecurity in relationships, problems with emotional self-regulation and difficulties in parenting and careers. Viewing issues from a family systems perspective, Breakthrough groups are not focused on blaming parents, or searching for the events that may have caused current problems. The general goal for most clients is to improve quality of life by examining and addressing the “how” of their struggles rather than “why” they struggle. When the past is relevant, Breakthrough professionals will dip into the past to shed light on current issues or to reduce shame.

When they arrive, clients usually understand and know a great deal about what is wrong and what they should do but they have been unable to make the change they seek. Since most clients are already in effective outpatient therapy, the mission for Breakthrough is to create an environment where your client may begin to experience real change and integrate the skills and tools they already have. At the end of 5 days in an experiential group, clients have not only reached an awareness of their issues. They feel more confident; know who they are and they love themselves. They have begun to better manage their emotions, particularly fear and shame. When they leave, their personal therapists report that they are actively engaged in a process of change.

Our research has shown a gradual increase in self esteem, and improvement in their relationships over the year after completing the program.

One of the greatest advantages of referring to Breakthrough is that it provides clients the time and place to step back from their sometimes chaotic daily lives to gain perspective on underlying emotions and the repetitive nature of some of their behaviors. After attending Breakthrough, clients have a new perspective and are better equipped to use ongoing therapy and their support system to solve problems and make decisions with new found self-esteem and empowerment.
