Purpose

The purpose of the study was to examine whether enduring dysfunctional personality patterns, interpersonal problems and negative relationship dynamics significantly changed during the week of Breakthrough and if change was sustained over time (12 months). Participants were given assessments at entrance and upon leaving Breakthrough, and were repeated 6 and 12 months later.

This research showed that during the week of Breakthrough and over the next 12 months:

  • Self-esteem significantly increased over the course of the week and continued to improve significantly even 12 months later.*
  • Symptoms of distress (such as anxiety and depression) showed a significant decrease.*
  • Emotional Inhibition showed significant improvement.**
  • Self-sacrifice (compromising personal well-being) showed a significant decrease.**
  • Passivity significantly decreased.**
  • Avoidant behaviors significantly decreased .**

Conclusions

Brief but intense group-based experiential therapy (Breakthrough at Caron) was associated with improvement during and continuing/maintained 12 months after the residential program.

Therapist Satisfaction Surveys of the Breakthrough Program have shown that:

  • 85% of therapists felt their client showed an increased commitment to personal growth
  • 96% of therapists would be willing to refer another client to Breakthrough in the future
