In Response to Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is currently selling Hairroin pens in the shape of hypodermic needles. The pouch these pens come in states, “I love Hairroin.”

Heroin is a growing epidemic in the United States. It is a serious issue with deadly consequences. By creating and selling this product, Urban Outfitters is mocking and belittling an issue that is devastating hundreds of thousands of individuals and families in our nation. The use of heroin should never be considered mainstream or culturally acceptable.

Government studies estimate the number of heroin users is up about 75% from 5 years ago, according to USA Today. Furthermore, heroin & related opioid pain pills have killed more than 125,000 in the US in the past 10 years. As a society, we need to come together to raise awareness about the dangers of this drug. We need to educate about prevention and treatment. We need to help those struggling with addiction. Urban Outfitters represents the antithesis of these ideals by trivializing this important issue and sends a dangerous message to teens and young adults. For this reason, Caron Treatment Centers has signed the change.org petition asking Urban Outfitters to remove this product from their stores and apologize for promoting drug use.

As an organization, we strive to raise awareness about addiction as well as to end the stigma surrounding it. It is important to educate the public about issues such as heroin addiction and the importance of seeking help. With about 1 in 10 Americans suffering from addiction, the disease affects everyone in some shape or form. We hope Urban Outfitters will think twice before promoting drug use moving forward.
