Spiritual Freedom

Last Spiritual Friday, we discussed the concept of Spiritual Freedom. We had several beautiful readings that began with the AA “Promises”, also known as the “Promises of Freedom”. They powerfully describe the freedom we experience when we surrender, when we make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of G-d. We are promised freedom from regret, hopelessness, self-pity, self-centeredness, and fear.

We read two quotes by Marianne Williamson:

"When we surrender to G-d, we let go of our attachment to how things happen on the outside, and we become more concerned with what happens on the inside."

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our Light, not our Darkness that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?

Actually, who are you NOT to be?

You are a child of G-d.
Your playing small
does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that
other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of G-d
that is within us.
It is not just in some of us;
it is in everyone.
As we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

These words were chosen by a patient to read to remind us all that this power is also within each of us as addicts and we must not forget that. It is this truth, that the power of G-d is within us, that brings us to our knees and to our miracles.

We showed the patients the deeply touching and spiritually inspiring story of Zach Sobiech who truly attained spiritual freedom in his love of G-d, family, friends, and life.

So much inner strength and peace.

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the people I cannot change,
the courage to change the ones I can,

and the wisdom to know it's me.

- Serenity Prayer

Namaste,
