My life has been forever changed thanks to Caron, recovery and the 12 steps. The greatest change I can see and experience on a daily basis is in my relationships with my family and friends.
My daughter recently spoke at a Caron event sharing her experience, strength and hope and how our family is breaking the pattern of addiction. As I listened to her speak I could see the wreckage of the thread of addiction being smashed before my eyes. It was truly a profound moment for us.
I grew up in an alcoholic home. Never in a million years would I think I would fill those shoes but I did. It was fast and hard in my thirties and ran into my early forties. I managed to ruin relationship after relationship.
Today I have a relationship with each member of my family that had been strained or lost. I am present. I am honest. I care. I help. I ask for forgiveness. I feel, for better or for worse. I am free from the shackles of addition. I am grateful.
One of the biggest things that helped our family was having each family member participate in the recovery process. My mother and siblings attended the family program at Caron which gave them an understanding and education of the disease. My daughter attended the children's program at Caron which was life changing for her. My ex husband and his wife attended Alanon meetings while I attended AA and my daughter attended an Alateen meeting in a local big church every Tuesday night for a time.
Thanks to recovery we all ask for help. We recognize when we maybe need to apologize or put out a helping hand. We healed and continue to heal.
The twelve steps are a gift no matter what side of this disease you may fall on. I am on both sides and am grateful for the gift of recovery.
