What is addiction? Many view it as a choice, a question of will power, or a moral failing. As a result, substance use disorder leads to isolation and shame. Many are left with overwhelming questions: How bad is it? How did this happen? Is it my fault? What does this mean? What do I do now?

Families experience shock and fear when they begin to suspect a loved one may have a substance use problem. Feeling scared and alone, they do not know how to help or where to turn. As if they are standing alone in the middle of a frozen lake - they are on thin ice.

This presentation provides a conceptual framework for addiction and recovery, and details a process for family recovery. First, participants will understand addiction and what it means to be powerless over drugs and alcohol. Second, they will learn how to help their loved one without contributing to the problem. Third, and most critically, they will be given guidance on how to begin healing themselves.
