The focus of this presentation is on a basic understanding of how addiction and trauma/PTSD are defined. Dr. Pole will discuss similarities in how each of these issues effects the brain. Participants will gain an understanding of the range of trauma responses and the multiple pathways to trauma responses. Additionally, there will be discussion of the interactive nature of addiction and trauma, how this effects families and what families can do.

Michele Pole, Ph.D. is the Senior Director of Psychological Services at Caron. Dr. Pole has training in numerous evidence-based treatment approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-based approaches. Additionally, she is trained in several treatments addressing PTSD and trauma including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, and Eye-Movement Desensitization Therapy (EMDR). Dr. Pole has presented nationally and internationally on addiction and trauma. In addition she has been interviewed by numerous news outlets on various topics including addiction, trauma/PTSD, shame and the #metoo movement. Dr. Pole and her team use evidence-based treatment approaches for co-occurring disorders, trauma/PTSD treatment, and psychological testing services at Caron PA.
