About 10% of North Americans are diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime, and most will have comorbid conditions (e.g., depression, substance use, dissociation). Fortunately, effective psychotherapies exist for treating these conditions. Cognitive Processing Therapy is an evidence-based therapy used to treat posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in individual and group settings. CPT is a recommended first-line therapy in current treatment guidelines world-wide.

There are 4 primary targets in CPT:

  1. psychoeducation about PTSD from a cognitive perspective;
  2. cognitive-behavioral self-monitoring;
  3. cognitive interventions specific to trauma appraisals;
  4. cognitive interventions aimed at overgeneralized beliefs emanating from traumatization.

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe PTSD symptoms and theory underlying CPT;
  2. List pre-treatment issues and recommended assessment measures;
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills required to implement CPT, an evidence-based psychotherapy for PTSD;
  4. Describe the different formats of group CPT and when they would be appropriate; and
  5. Demonstrate knowledge and skills required to implement CPT in a group format.

Additional Information

CPT Consultation and CPT Provider Status
As clinicians begin to deliver CPT in their practice, it is inevitable that questions and situations will arise. Consultation with an expert CPT Consultant after the workshop provides answers to clinical questions and feedback to support clinicians in confidently and competently delivering CPT. CPT Case Consultation is optional, and is available for an additional fee. While optional, CPT Consultation is one of the essential components to achieving CPT Provider Status. Details of this will be discussed at the workshop. For more information about CPT Provider Status and Consultation, please visit: www.cptforptsd.com.
