In looking at all the many and varied ways one can pray, I would like to begin by offering the suggestion that you create a prayerful place, a place in your home that is specifically set up for you to have quiet. A prayer place will hold the energy that you leave there. For example, I have a shed at my home. In the shed is a chair, blanket, a box to put my feet on and a pillow for comfort. Also in this place, I write prayers for myself and others and tape them to the wall. In this place, I read spiritual material that helps me in times of distress, loneliness and gratitude. This place is mine and no one but me goes in.

Prayer, in another sense, can be movement. Like working in a garden, or perhaps doing creative work like art, writing music, or poetry are all forms of prayer. Prayer can be in the car, walking down the street, or kneeling beside your bed. In some Earth-based traditions people pay attention to the phases of the moon and practice rituals. A ritual is an act that is repeated with thought and reverence. A ritual might look like standing in the full moon and giving thanks to the moons part in keeping the earth spinning.

Prayer can be more traditional, for example, prayers from one’s childhood, or faith tradition.

A simple prayer is: “help me, help me, help me” and then “thank you, thank you, thank you.” Of course there is the Serenity Prayer. Prayer can be said out loud or in the quiet of your own heart. Prayer is a way of saying “I believe in something and I need that something or someone to help guide and comfort me.”

Prayer is a time when you can close the happenings of the world down for a minute or an hour. Prayer is a calling card that tells the Universe you need help, clarity, or comfort. One important thing to remember about prayer is to bring your full and authentic self. Please set your intention as you pray, and remember to be careful for what you pray for, you just may receive your answer and it may be granted in ways you never thought possible.

Happy prayer time.
