My name is Mitchell Leff and I am an alcoholic and drug addict. I want to use my full name for the sole purpose of being helpful to those who still suffer. Please find me or reach out if you or your family is struggling.

One day at a time, since I left Caron in August of 2006, I have had a second chance at life.  I went to inpatient for four months in Wernersville, Magic Mountain, Pennsylvania. It has been a bumpy roller coaster of life since I left Caron, but I am alive today. After a couple of relapses, I got back on the right path and have been sober now since August 2008.

One thing I have noticed since I left Caron is that maintaining my sobriety is not easy. It is simple, but not easy. I have to be willing, on a daily basis, to put in the work needed to stay sober. Two things that have helped me along the way are service and advocacy.

I have to give back and service keeps me sober. In my personal program of recovery as well as publicly, I try to be of service as much possible. The memory of those who have lost their lives to this disease, keeps me going. We lost a couple people last year, who I will never forget.

I have participated and was one of the founding members of YARN (Young Adult Recovery Network), Helped out with a number of event’s for Gregg’s Gift, and last year ran the New York City marathon to benefit Caron. Yes, that is right, a pack a day Newport smoker for all my adult life, was able to run a Marathon! Do you believe in a higher power now?

Joking aside, with the help of Runwell, a few special people, and everyone that donated to the cause, I was able to get in the marathon, raise over $3,500 personally, and over $28,000 as a team for Caron. It was donated and spread out for patient scholarships.

We are running it again this year, back 2 back 4 Caron.  Here is the link to my donation page if you can support: http://runwell.donorpages.com/TCSNYCMarathon2015/Mitch4Caron/

In Love and Service,

Mitch
