“They say that the soul of man is immortal: at one time it comes to an end - that which is called death – and at another is born again, but is never finally exterminated.” -Plato

The tapestry of Better Together has many threads. Step one of 12-Step programs, which begins with “We admit we are powerless…” is what I consider the foundation thread of recovery. Many individuals dealing with a substance use disorder find themselves in isolation, but we recover together…better together!

From a family systems thread, it is the family coming together and fighting addiction instead of fighting each other.

Plato introduces the idea of dualistic nature of the human person; the mystical person. The mystical thread is allowing the Universe to support you. Melody Beattie, after loosing her son to addiction, took a healing journey. She packed up her jeep and went driving, a walk-about if you will. She went to scared places, met sacred people, and wrote a daily meditation book, “Journey to the Heart.”

The title for May 28th, “Let the Universe Support You.” The passage begins by asking questions focused on where one gets his/her power and energy. For Bettie, a key in this passage is as follows, “..one of our lessons has been to broaden our connections, to connect to the Universe, to open up to all the love and support that is there for us’ (p.153).

As I reflect on my own recovery, I realized that I needed others, my family biological or family of choice, and the Universe’s love for me. I could not climb out of the self-hatred alone, I needed light and a ladder. I needed the threads of others and the Universe to help me see and climb out of a dark hole.

The end of the Beattie passage asks a final question, “Are you willing to become connected to the Universe?” and a final prayer: Open your heart, your mind, your soul, and let the universe teach you about Divine love. Stop limiting your source to only one person. Open to a limitless source of support and energy. Open to the Universe.

Allowing others to love you is a risky tapestry, risk it anyway.
