What is addiction? Many people view it as choice, a question of will power or a moral failing. As a result, the disease of chemical dependency leads to isolation and shame. Many are left with overwhelming questions:
“How bad is it? Is this a problem? How did this happen? What does this mean? What do I do now?”
Families experience shock and fear when they begin to suspect a loved one may have a problem. Feeling scared and alone, they do not know how to help or where to turn. Standing alone in the middle of a frozen lake, they are on thin ice.
This interactive presentation provides a conceptual framework for addiction and recovery. It details a process for family recovery. First, they need to understand addiction and what it means to be powerless over drugs and alcohol. Second, they learn how to help an addict without contributing to the problem. Third, and most critically, they begin to heal themselves.
