Areas of Expertise: Families, Relationships

Ann Smith is a Clinical Consultant to Breakthrough at Caron, a residential 5 day program to help adults overcome obstacles that may have previously blocked their efforts towards developing healthier relationships, positive connections and emotional stability. For over 30 years, her focus has been on family systems, healthy relationships and experiential group therapy.

Ann is best known for developing and leading innovative residential treatment programs for adults who are struggling with relationship patterns developed from early attachment injuries in core relationships. She returned to Caron in January of 2009 with her original Breakthrough program and transitioned to the roll as Clinical Consultant in July of 2015. A pioneer of counseling for family of origin and relationship issues, she was instrumental in designing and directing the original five-day program for Adult Children of Alcoholics from 1984 to 1991 at Caron, which reached more than 14,000 people.

Ann has a master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Pennsylvania. For more than 30 years, she has lectured at conferences including US Journal, Rutgers, International Transpersonal Assoc., and provided workshops on topics ranging from addiction in the family to healing relationships. She developed a 3 day intensive couple’s workshop based on Emotionally Focused Therapy in conjunction with Breakthrough. The innovative Breakthrough at Caron program was featured in a one hour NBC Dateline program in March 2011. In addition to Dateline NBC, Ann's media interviews include National Public Radio, Newsweek, Us Magazine, Redbook, U.S. News and World Report, Philadelphia Magazine, Washington Post, Forbes Women, Huffington Post and Wall Street Journal.

She is the author of three books titled Overcoming Perfectionism: Finding the Key to Balance and Self Acceptance, second edition released in March 2013, Overcoming Perfectionism: the Key to a Balanced Recovery 1st edition 1990 and Grandchildren of Alcoholics: Another Generation of Co-dependency (available as an e-book). Her blog “Healthy Connections”, currently active on Psychology Today’s website is frequently listed as an “essential read” with over 700,000 views to date.
