Programs for Parents

Parenting for Prevention

Parenting in this day and age can be difficult. Caregivers often have questions such as, "How should I start the conversation?" This workshop addresses these and other concerns and gives participants the tools for assisting the child to be successful in resisting drugs and alcohol.

TIPP (Transition Instruction for Parents Program)

Parents are often the most powerful and convincing catalyst in deterring their children from substance abuse. Parents do more to shape the views of their children than any other influence in their lives. Caron's TIPP is geared towards the parents of 5th grade students to prepare them to handle certain challenges they may face as their child enters middle school. The program is facilitated once a week over a four-week period.

This unique program is designed to address the following issues:

Middle/High School Parent Presentation

This presentation is designed to keep parents of middle and high school students up-to-date about current trends in adolescent drug use and prevention efforts. Designed to help parents feel more prepared to handle the often difficult job of setting rules, expectations and boundaries consistent with keeping teens drug-free, this program gives advice for what to do if you suspect signs and symptoms of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.

"The Other Talk" - Preparing Your Teen For Success in College

As we are all aware, there is great concern today regarding students' alcohol usage. It can be quite difficult to make parents aware of the critical role they play in this arena. Parents are perhaps even more skeptical of what impact they have once their sons and daughters go away to college. Too often parents feel the need to avoid this issue or to make general statements such as, "I just want you to be careful and not do anything stupid once you get to college."

To remedy this situation, Caron's Student Assistance Department has designed a program particularly for the parents of students whose post graduation plans are to attend college. The goal of this program is to facilitate parents' ability to communicate accurate, healthy and legal messages to their children regarding college alcohol use.

Enabling

This program offers a discussion regarding enabling and how a child is hindered rather than helped when accountability is overlooked. Discussions include defining the term "enabling," reviewing how educators and caregivers can address and overcome enabling behaviors, and why it is important to address this issue at home and within the school.
