Kenneth W. Thompson

Kenneth W. Thompson, M.D., FASAM
Medical Director

Dr. Thompson has worked in addiction medicine since he went through his own recovery process 22 years ago. Since that time, he has participated in the interventions, assessment, treatment, and/or monitoring of more than 18,000 addiction-related patients.  

At Caron, Dr. Thompson oversees detoxification and addiction medicine. Dr. Thompson is an expert in the treatment of impaired professionals and also has an expertise in dual diagnosis and chronic pain issues.

Dr. Thompson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) since 1990. In 2003, Dr. Thompson was selected as a Fellow of ASAM, an honor granted to select ASAM physician members for their significant contributions to the society and to the field of addiction medicine.

Before joining Caron, Dr. Thompson was an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, Florida. He was instrumental in the development and opening of the Florida Recovery Center, the University of Florida College of Medicine's first addiction treatment facility. At the University, he was involved in the education of medical students, residents and Fellows in Addiction Medicine. He received his Medical Degree from Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia.

Joseph A. Troncale

Joseph A. Troncale, M.D.
Senior Physician

Dr. Troncale is responsible for patient and family education and direct patient care at Caron. He was previously Caron's Medical Director for the past eight years. He frequently works with patients who have co-occurring addiction, mental health and medical diseases that require medication as a component of treatment. 

He developed and leads the educational component of Caron's comprehensive family program that teaches both patients and their families about the biology and genetics of addiction as a disease. During his tenure at Caron, he introduced neurofeedback as a therapeutic technique for treating anxiety and other affective problems.

Dr. Troncale is also responsible for educating doctors, medical residents and students about addiction at Caron's main campus in Wernersville. He speaks frequently to the media and at conferences about addiction and related issues.

Dr. Troncale is a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice, a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Berks County Medical Society. He is the Chairman of the Family and Generational Issues Workgroup for the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

He formerly served as a full-time faculty member at Jefferson Medical College, the University of Alabama Birmingham and the University of South Alabama. He earned his M.D. from the University of South Alabama and his undergraduate degree at the University of Alabama.

Harris Stratyner, Ph.D.

Harris Stratyner, Ph.D., CASAC
Regional Vice President of Caron New York

Dr. Stratyner is the Regional Vice President for Caron Treatment Centers' New York Recovery Center. He is a renowned addiction and mental health treatment specialist with more than 27 years of experience. In addition to treating patients, he oversees the clinical staff and develops and implements workshops and programs for patients in recovery at Caron New York.

Dr. Stratyner developed the technique "Carefrontation," which combines the latest motivational engagement techniques and an environment of respect and dignity to stress individual responsibility to deal with one's addiction or mental health condition.

Dr. Stratyner currently holds positions as a Clinical Associate Professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and as a Vice Chair of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) Board of Directors. He is also a contributing author to the PDR Guide to Pediatric & Adolescent Mental Health (Published in 2009 by Thomson Reuters).

Before joining Caron, Dr. Stratyner held leadership and academic positions at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He was listed by the prestigious Castle Connelly almanac as one of the profession's leading specialists.

Michelle L. Maloney

Michelle L. Maloney, MS, LPC, CAC Diplomate
Executive Director of the Caron Continuum

Ms. Maloney is responsible for overseeing the clinical, programming, training and daily management of the adult and young adult centers at Caron. She also continues to participate in both individual and family therapy. Her addiction expertise includes a range of areas such as women’s issues, young adults and the elderly. She speaks frequently about relationships and recovery and eating disorders.

Ms. Maloney has been with Caron Treatment Centers for more than 12 years providing training and coaching to clinical and supervisory staff at Caron. She also takes an active role in education regarding issues of addiction and serves as a public spokesperson to community and organizational groups.

Ms. Maloney holds a Masters in counseling psychology from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. She is also a licensed professional counselor.
