Depression, Anxiety Ups Addiction Among Older Americans
The number of older adults who reported using illegal drugs within a year nearly doubled between 2002 and 2007, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration...Depression and anxiety were cited as the top reasons for drug or alcohol abuse, according to a survey conducted by the Hanley Center, a drug and alcohol treatment and recovery center. Economic and financial stress and retirement were reported as contributing factors as well. Depression, Anxiety Top Reasons Older Adults Abuse Drugs or Alcohol, Survey Finds
Depression and anxiety are the top reasons older adults abuse drugs or alcohol, according to a study by a Florida drug and alcohol treatment and recovery center. The study, conducted by the Hanley Center, found 63 percent of older adults blamed depression and anxiety for their substance use. Thirty percent said economic and financial stress was to blame, while 20 percent cited retirement as contributing factors to dependency. Almost half of survey respondents named both prescription drugs and alcohol as their substance of choice, according to a press release by the Caron Treatment Centers, which owns the Hanley Center. -Drugfree Partnership

Substance Abuse Growing Among Older Adults
New data document a growing trend of substance abuse among older adults, for whom the most commonly reported trigger is depression or anxiety. Nearly half of respondents in a survey expressed preference toward prescription drugs and alcohol over other substances. Still, the number of older adults reporting recent illegal drug use nearly doubled in the five-year span from 2002 to 2007, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, which also reported a 77 percent increase in the use of nonmedical pharmaceuticals between 2002 and 2009, an average growth of 11 percent per year. Caron Treatment Centers highlighted these findings and warned that “[without] early intervention and treatment these statistics will continue to rise, leading to an epidemic in addiction among older Americans.” - Healthcare For All

Surge of Seniors Getting Addicted Later in Life
A new generation of addicts is getting hooked later in life, with many senior citizens and baby boomers revealed to be "late blooming" substance abusers.
