For Families of Teens
Caron believes it is imperative to engage an individual’s family from the onset of treatment. We put a major emphasis on treating the family as part of the treatment and recovery process.
Family involvement in treatment is vital for a teen’s long-term recovery, particularly because the entire family has been impacted by the disease of addiction. During the course of an a teenager’s stay at Caron, it is critical for parents and other appropriate family members to attend Caron’s Family Program for Teens and Adolescents.
Families are given information about:
- The disease concept of addiction
- 12-Step programs
- Recovery tools
- Creating a ‘Home Contract’ between parent and child
- Setting boundaries
- Issues relating to relapse, medications and mental health
- Continuing care plans
- As well as other topics crucial for family recovery efforts
The Family Program, which runs Saturday-Tuesday, helps families and teenagers understand the emotional consequences of addiction, the recovery process, and how families play an integral role in that process.
The Family Component in Teen Extended Care
The family component in teen extended care consists of weekly sessions with the adolescent’s addiction counselor, and once a month a full-day of multi-family group sessions. Family treatment helps the families and patients understand the emotional consequences and the impact addiction has placed upon the family system.
