How do I tell if my loved one has a substance abuse problem; what do I look for as a parent/family member?

Many times it is very difficult to tell if the behaviors that you are seeing in your loved one are just a stage or if they reflect a substance abuse problem or addiction.  Log onto www.assessmyfamily.com to getting a clearer picture regarding your loved one's behavior, and if they may be addicted to drugs and/or alcohol.

You can also receive information from other parents, as well as Caron professionals about early warning signs that point to addiction or problematic substance use.

How do I determine what type of treatment is best for my loved one; is inpatient or outpatient treatment the best?

The most important task is to ask the right questions. Should it be inpatient or outpatient? Find out what you should know about a treatment program prior to admitting your loved one. Programs that include family involvement, educational programs and recreation, and have good outcomes are all important. Ask parents about their experiences and/or Caron professionals. Be an informed consumer.

My loved one is coming home from treatment soon.  How do I prepare for them to come home, and how can I support their recovery?

You need a plan.  Ask other parents what they believe is important to consider about your loved one's friends, school, workplace, potential relapse triggers and other issues.
